Fluoride

What is fluoride? What are some of he major controversy’s over fluoride? Is it good or bad to add fluoride to our drinking water? And is adding it really necessary? In this essay I will answer all of these questions and others.

There has been much controversy over adding fluoride to drinking water. Many people believe that adding too much fluoride to your water can cause health problems and it is dangerous. Others think that adding fluoride to your water will prevent tooth decay. In reality, adding too much fluoride to drinking water can cause your teeth to decay and begin to discolor. The EPA has determined that water fluoridation of community water systems of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams of fluoride per liter of drinking water is safe and effectively prevents tooth decay. Some people believe that this is too much fluoride to have in their water. Others believe that drinking water with fluoride in it can cause harm to their bodies without even realizing the effect that it is having on them. I believe that having fluoride in water is not necessary.

I believe that it is not necessary to add fluoride to drinking water. Although it may help prevent tooth decay and has other benefits, there are also down sides to having fluoride in drinking water. The amount of fluoride that is in our water could be enough to harm our bodies. It may be most harmful to younger children. Because younger children are smaller, the amount of fluoride that they consume while drinking water would have more effect on them than a grown man. Although the fluoride may help prevent children’s teeth from decaying, it is better for children to regularly brush their teeth than run the risk of harming themselves. Even though fluoride is known to strengthen teeth, the results of adding fluoride to water have not shown significant effects on kid’s teeth. Fluoride is not a necessary chemical to put in drinking water.

Many technological advances had to be made to provide a safe toothpaste with fluoride in it. One of the ways that scientists made our toothpastes safe with fluoride was that they married the fluoride with compatible abrasive. This means that the makers of the toothpaste had to choose a mild fluoride type to use in their toothpaste that would not harm people’s teeth or bodies. Most often, they used sodium fluoride. They needed this mild fluoride to keep the fluoride from toxicating the user of the toothpaste. Calcium pyrophosphate is one of the many compounds that scientists used in toothpastes. Sodium fluoride is one of the more recent discoveries that was made in fluoridizing toothpastes. In the future, there may be many more discoveries that can help us keep our teeth clean while keeping our bodies safe.

Several studies have shown some relation between the drinking of water with fluoride in it to bladder cancer and breast cancer. Women with breast cancer tend to have more fluoride in their breast tissues than women without breast cancer. This is a scary thought considering that a large amount of women today are drinking fluorinated water. The toxic chemical in fluorine can also cause other side effects but I think this is the worst because it is easily preventable. So many women are diagnosed with breast cancer because of something other than fluorinated water. If we take out more fluoride from our drinking water, we can prevent more women from suffering from this horrible illness. If women were drinking water with less or no fluoride in it than we could help prevent so many women from getting breast cancer.

Is fluoride really a necessary item to have in our drinking water? Could we help prevent breast cancer by taking it out of our water? Does water with fluoride in it really prevent kids teeth from decaying? Does fluoride benefit younger children’s teeth? Should we worry about the amount of fluoride our body’s consume through drinking water? These are some questions you might want to think about the next time you drink a cup of water.
